TLRU continues to facilitate networking; and to research and publish on the laws, policies and practices which affect Gypsies and Travellers. We speak at local authority and other events on these matters, and during the academic year 1999/2000 hope to teach on modules in Cardiff Law School and the University Wales Cardiff School of Journalism relating to press regulation and press coverage of Gypsy and Traveller issues. We provide advice and assistance to Travellers on evictions, problems on official sites (eg. threatened possesion action, disrepair, site closure), and planning matters. We visit sites where necessary and have a 24 hour mobile number: 07768 316755. We can take swift legal action and make urgent court challenges where possible. We join with traveller support groups in the general fight for traveller rights, for the provision of transit and permanent good quality sites and the abolition of the draconian measures introduced by the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. We are experts in the use of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act 1998, to protect travellers rights. We have won many important battles in the courts for travellers, helped to ensure a private site in Birmingham, have won many planning appeals, forced the police to accept responsibility for taking into account "considerations of common humanity". Changed local authority policies and practices through-out the country in many areas. We cover the whole of england and wales. We produce a free quarterly newsletter and do a great deal of free (pro bono) work over the phone to Travellers and to support groups. |

Travellers' School CharityThe TSC aims to help Travellers with the successful education of children. This may be through the provision of advice and materials for home education; or through back-up work for children whose education has suffered through constant changes in school. There is also a commitment to advise parents about pre-school teaching. The TSC works across the whole of the UK, both through a variety of projects and by responding to postal requests. The old "Skool Bus" has gone, but two geodesic domes remain. Volunteers are available to offer a constructive play area and publicity stall at events nationwide. Pager 01426-218424. For the past 5 years, One of the Trustees, Lucy, has been co-ordinating the organisation of children's camps, at which groups of Traveller families can meet and work together. Thers is a corespondence education course available; monthly deliveries of relevant resources are made to sites as we know of them; advice and help is offered to those wanting to select appropriate schools, while those needing particular materials for education at home are assisted. Workbooks, stories and colouring books reflecting traveller culture are available; as well as advice leaflets free to travellers - donation appreciated. At cost price to other home educators.
