Stonehenge Free Festival
in 1984
Although some (police, local authority, farmers etc etc) have held
these photographs of the site as being evidence of the damage we cause
by attending events at Stonehenge. Personally, I feel they are proof
positive, of many thousands of people, co-operating in arranging thier
lives for community benefit. No leaders, no site plan. Just identified
common needs and a capacity to 'work it out'. Look in closer, loads
of room, lack of litter, trackways for the public to navigate about,
trade enabled. Fire, ambulance and welfare teams found very easy access.
Compare and contrast with the set-up at Glastonbury.
Stonehenge was built by the ancient peoples of our land, several
thousand years ago. The monument played a very significant part in
their lives, being used for social and religious gatherings. More
recently the stones have seen a revival of celebrations taking place,
and the circle is once more a living monument. In 1985 the modern
free festival was stopped, in a now famous violent
confrontation. My work is dedicated to those who wish to see the
circle remain a gathering place of the people, rather than having
it put away in a glass case as an archeological exhibit.
